How Much Should I Give? When considering your financial support of the Lord’s work through our church, have you ever wondered how much to give? How much is enough? How much is too little? To the Corinthians, Paul wrote, “Yet each person must make up his own mind what he will give. He must not be pushed or compelled to give. God loves a cheerful giver. But do not let fear of the future prevent you from being generous.” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8) So, it’s left up to you. Here are two answers to how much each of us should give—one from the Old Testament, one from the New. Download bulletin for 8:15 AM and 9:30 AM service Download bulletin for 11:00 AM service
Old Testament: The law of Moses demanded that the Hebrews give tithes (a tenth) from their herds and their fields. There is evidence that the Jews actually gave two tithes annually and a third tithe every third year. This would mean giving 20% to 25%. When God told Israel to give a tenth of everything, he said, “That the Lord God may bless you in all the work you do.” (Deut. 14:29) So, according to the Old Testament, God wants a tenth. And He can send greater blessings your way. New Testament:Paul said you should give as God has prospered you, that you should give regularly and that you should give on the first day of the week. Does it affect your giving to know that you receive from life what you put into it? That’s what the New Testament teaches. That’s why some people believe it’s difficult to establish an exact percent for giving. The Old Testament teaches a tenth (tithe). Many believe that according to the New Testament, a tenth is not enough. However you look at it, if you give as God has given to you, the amount may have a floor (a tenth) - but not a ceiling. When you give according to God’s gifts to you, the amount you give should be determined by the measure of your gratitude, your love, your compassion and your commitment. It should be determined by the warmth of your love and appreciations and not by a cold percentage of your income, because giving for God’s work is a sure sign of your love.
